As part of the Faculty’s commitment to improving Indigenous inclusion, all U of T Engineering faculty, staff and students are called upon to start or continue their personal journeys towards understanding and acknowledging Indigenous peoples’ history, truths and culture. Launched in 2021, the Indigenous Cultural Competency Toolkit has been created by and with Indigenous leaders to help guide your journey.
Speaking Our Truths: The Journey Toward Reconciliation consist of two 2-hour sessions.
- Part 1 looks at the Canada’s hidden history of Indigenous-settler relations
- Part 2 will examine the effects of the decisions and policies initiated by the British and Canadian state on Indigenous people up to the present day.
Facilitated by John Croutch, cultural competency training officer in U of T’s Office of Indigenous Initiatives, Part 1 looks at the hidden history of Canada – a history that has been largely untold that examines the attitudes, legislation and policies of the Crown that erased Indigenous peoples’ history from Canadian landscape. We examine how powerful Indigenous nations, critical allies and trading partners were devalued and systematically stripped of their lands, resources and eventually their identities.
