Lunch & Learn: Metal additive manufacturing: from 3D printing to industrial applications

Metal additive manufacturing (AM), also known as 3D printing, is revolutionizing industries by enabling the precise creation of complex parts with unprecedented flexibility. This technology reduces waste, accelerates production and allows for customized designs, making everyday products—such as medical devices and transportation components—more accessible and affordable. As AM continues to evolve, it holds the potential to transform key aspects of our lives.   

How might metal 3D printing impact everything from healthcare to environmental sustainability?  

Professor Yu Zou’s research delves into the fundamentals of metal AM, exploring its material properties, design principles and real-world applications. He will discuss the technology’s current and future applications, highlighting its impact in critical fields such as aerospace, biomedical engineering, and energy.

About the speaker: Professor Yu Zou

Dr. Yu Zou is an Associate Professor in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering, holding a Canada Research Chair and the Dean’s Spark Professorship. With advanced degrees from Beihang University, McGill University and ETH Zurich, and postdoctoral work at MIT, his research focuses on materials with extreme properties.  

Dr. Zou leads the Laboratory for Extreme Mechanics & Additive Manufacturing (LEMAM), where research topics include the design of novel metallic materials, multiscale mechanical testing, metal additive manufacturing (3D printing) and applied machine learning. Dr. Zou is teaching “Mechanical behaviour of materials”, “Fracture and failure of materials” and “Additive manufacturing of advanced engineering materials”.
