Artificial intelligence and advanced analytics are changing the way we live, the way businesses operate, and how the most complex problems in the world are tackled.
Disease prevention, global refugee crisis mitigation, flood forecasting, marine protection, detecting diseased crops and fighting deforestation, are just a fraction of the applications of artificial intelligence in the developing world. Truly addressing these challenges will not only require the use of state-of-the-art machine learning algorithms and excellent data quality, but strong partnerships between the private sector, public sector, and government institutions.
Hosted by GE Week and sponsored by the Boston Consulting Group, the AI & Big Data: Future of Global Development panel will bring together thought leaders from business, tech, academia, and political science to discuss how machine learning, advanced analytics, and artificial intelligence can be used to address global development challenges. The discussion will also highlight private sector, public sector, and government institutions can work together to implement the most innovative and sustainable solutions.

Carla Bromberg is the Program Lead of AI for Social Good at Google – a program that through research, engineering, and initiatives to build the ecosystem (e.g. the Google AI Impact Challenge), is working to use AI to address some of the world’s greatest social, humanitarian and environmental challenges. Carla co-founded and program manages the overall initiative, along with many of its engineering and research projects.
Carla has worked at Google for almost 12 years. Prior to her current role, she was the program management lead across Google’s company-wide engineering internal education, content development and documentation programs. Building strategic programs to help engineers learn about the latest technologies and best practices. Carla obtained a B.S. degree from Marymount Manhattan College, and was awarded the distinction of the MMC Crest, and a Gold Key award for academic excellence. Carla sits on the Business Advisory Board for Marymount Manhattan College.
Jessie Duncan is a Project Leader and Expert in Global Health and Social Impact with BCG. While at BCG she has worked extensively on the applications of AI in global health, particularly what AI use cases have the greatest potential to transform healthcare in low and middle in countries around the globe – and how to ethically and equitably accelerate the deployment of AI technologies in low-resource contexts. She has worked with the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, Rockefeller Foundation and USAID Center for Innovation and Impact on these topics. Prior to joining BCG, she was the Head of Strategy at Medtronic Labs which focused on launching and scaling healthcare businesses for underserved populations in the developing world. Previously, Ms. Duncan was an advisor to the US Mission to the United Nations, developing US policy on the global refugee and migrant crisis, impact investing, and the private sector role around the SDG 2030 Agenda. She also held positions previously at the Clinton Health Access Initiative (CHAI) in East Africa and with the Brookings Institution.
Laura Frigenti is the Global Head of IDAS, where she works with development actors to implement effective and sustainable solutions in emerging economies. Prior to joining KPMG, she was by the chosen by former Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi as the Director of the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation. Ms. Frigenti was previously Vice-President of the Global Development Practice, an association of US non-governmental organizations active in international emergency, humanitarian aid and development cooperation. She also spent nearly 20 years at the World Bank, where she was most recently the Director of Strategy and Operations for Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean, and the Chief of Staff of the President’s Office.
Janice Gross Stein is the Belzberg Professor of Conflict Management in the Department of Political Science and was the Founding Director of the Munk School of Global Affairs and Public Policy at the University of Toronto (serving from 1998 to the end of 2014). She is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada and a member of the Order of Canada and the Order of Ontario. Her most recent publications include Networks of Knowledge: Innovation in International Learning (2000); The Cult of Efficiency (2001); and Street Protests and Fantasy Parks (2001). She is a contributor to Canada by Picasso (2006) and the co-author of The Unexpected War: Canada in Kandahar (2007). She was the Massey Lecturer in 2001 and a Trudeau Fellow. She was awarded the Molson Prize by the Canada Council for an outstanding contribution by a social scientist to public debate. She is an Honorary Foreign Member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. She has been awarded Honorary Doctorate of Laws by the University of Alberta, the University of Cape Breton, McMaster University, and Hebrew University. In the media, she has provided commentary for networks such as CBC, CTV, TVO and CNN, and columns and comments for The Globe and Mail and The National Post.
