I am pleased to announce the appointment of Professor Milos Popovic as Director of the Institute of Biomedical Engineering (BME) for a five-year term beginning on July 1, 2023 and ending June 30, 2028.
Professor Popovic joined the Institute of Biomedical Engineering in 2001 as an Assistant Professor. He was promoted to Associate Professor in 2006 and Professor in 2009. Milos has served as the Director of the KITE Research Institute, the research arm of Toronto Rehabilitation Institute at University Health Network, since 2018. In 2011, he established the Centre for Research in Advanced Neural Implant Applications (CRANIA) at U of T and University Health Network.
Among his many achievements, Milos was awarded the Engineering Medal for Research and Development from the Professional Engineers of Ontario and Ontario Society of Professional Engineers in 2008 and elected to the College of Fellows of the American Institute of Medical and Biological Engineering in 2011. He has authored 243 peer-reviewed journal papers and delivered 285 keynotes and invited presentations. He also holds 21 patents/provisional patents.

I also would like to take this opportunity to extend my heartfelt thanks to Professor Warren Chan who served as BME’s Director since January 1, 2018. During his tenure as Director, BME grew its faculty complement, made significant investments in renovating legacy lab space in both the Rosebrugh and Mining Buildings, and launched several key partnerships, especially in immunobioengineering and pandemic-related initiatives.
