Advisory Committee on the Appointment of a Chair, Department of Electrical & Computer Engineering: Call for Nominations

Professor Deepa Kundur’s first term as Chair, Department of Electrical & Computer Engineering, ends on June 30, 2024; she is eligible for reappointment. In accordance with the Policy on Appointment of Academic Administrators, we will be commencing the process to seek approval of an Advisory Committee to the Dean on the appointment of a Chair, Department of Electrical & Computer Engineering.
The Committee should normally be composed as follows:

  • the Dean of the Faculty;
  • three to five members of the teaching staff of the department;
  • the Dean of the School of Graduate Studies or representative;
  • one or two members of cognate departments;
  • one or two students;
  • a Vice-Dean of the Faculty, where appropriate;
  • a librarian, where appropriate; and
  • in addition, the committee may include an alumnus/a, a member of the administrative staff and, in the case of professional faculties or schools, a senior member of the appropriate professional community.

I would appreciate receiving nominations for individuals to serve on the Advisory Committee by November 15, 2023. Please forward all nominations to the attention of the Dean (dean.engineering@utoronto.ca).

Draft Self-Study Document Available for Review

September 11, 2023

Since we began the Faculty’s self-study in May, we have received tremendous support in the form of meaningful content and feedback throughout the consultation process.
I am pleased to report that the completed self-study chapters are posted online for feedback and accessible by clicking on this link. Please share this link within the Faculty to those who may wish to review the draft. Any comments, corrections or feedback may be sent to the self-study working group by completing this form. Please send your comments by September 20, 2023.

A final draft of the self-study will be submitted to the Vice-Provost, Academic Programs on September 30, 2023. This document is a key element in the external review process and will be provided to the external review team that will visit our Faculty on December 4-6, 2023.
The review team members are:

  • Nora de Leeuw, Executive Dean, Faculty of Engineering and Physical Sciences, Leeds University
  • Jim A. Nicell, Dean, Faculty of Engineering McGill University
  • Ishwar Puri, Senior Vice President of Research & Innovation, University of Southern California

The provostial review is a critical element of the University’s commitment to quality assurance, providing an unparalleled opportunity to secure the expert advice of leaders in the field concerning academic and administrative issues, assess our performance against leading
international institutions, and receive guidance on key strategic directions. Your engagement is of paramount importance as the review process will lead to the development of our next Academic Plan.

associations, the Engineering Society, and alumni for their roles in the consultation process. Your contributions have enabled us to prepare this comprehensive draft.

Interim Speaker of Faculty Council, 2023-2024

September 5, 2023

Faculty Council Speaker Jun Nogami of the Department of Materials Science & Engineering, who was acclaimed speaker for two academic years beginning July 1, 2022, is on leave in 2023-2024.

During this time, Professor Ning Yan of the Department of Chemical Engineering & Applied Chemistry will be interim Speaker.

Professor Nogami will resume his role of Speaker in 2024-2025.
